LTER-Greece Mission

The mission of LTER-Greece is to deliver to the scientific community, policy makers, and society in general, sound scientific information and predictive understanding of ecological and socio-economic processes and to inform solutions to current and future environmental problems at local, national, European and global scales.

The vision of LTER-Greece is to improve the quality of life of all citizens through the application of long-term, large-scale research to the preservation and sustainable use of ecosystems. 

Identity

The Greek Long-term Ecosystem Research Network (LTER-Greece) is a collaborative network of scientists and their stakeholders engaged in long-term, site-based ecological, social and economic research in Greece. 

LTER-Greece is a national network, member of the European Long Term Ecosystem Research Network (LTER-Europe) and of the International Long Term Ecological Research Network (ILTER). 

Long-Term Ecosystem Research

Long-Term Ecosystem Research (LTER) is an essential component of world-wide efforts to better understand ecosystems. Through research and monitoring, LTER seeks to improve our knowledge of the structure and functions of ecosystems and their long-term response to environmental, societal and economic drivers. 

Greek Longterm Ecosystem Network (LTER-Greece)

About Us

The Greek Long Term Ecosystem Research Network (LTER-Greece) was established in 2017 and is a member of the international organization ILTER (www.ilternet.edu) and the European organization LTER – Europe (www.lter-europe.net).

It is a partnership of various national ecological and environmental research networks. The primary goal of LTER-Greece is to monitor the evolution of selected ecosystems through the collection and analyzes of long-term environmental data.

Its purpose is to study the impact of global, regional and local changes and their feedback on the environment and society and to provide suggestions and scientific support for resolving present and future environmental problems.

Through the data collected to accomplish the above purpose, the goal is also to provide value added services to the local community and its stakeholders. 

  • Collaboration

    To foster collaboration and coordination among long-term ecosystem researchers and research networks at local, regional, continental and global scales; 

  • Data

    To improve comparability of long-term ecological, social and economic data from sites around the world, and facilitate exchange and preservation of these data; 

  • Science

    To deliver scientific information to scientists, policymakers, and the public to meet the needs of decision-makers at multiple scales; 

  • Education

    To facilitate the education of the next generation of long-term scientists.

LTER-Greece Observatories and Ecosystems

The Greek network consists of the following observatories:

  1. Koiliaris Critical Zone Observatory (Technical University of  Crete),
  2. Hydrologic Observatory of Athens (National Technical University of Athens),
  3. Navarino Environmental Observatory (Stockholm University – Academy of Athens (BRFAA) – TEMES S.A.),
  4. Finokalia Atmospheric Observatory (University of Crete),
  5. Lesvos Biodiversity Observatory (University of the Aegean),
  6. Pinios Hydrologic Observatory (Greek Agricultural Organization – DEMETER, Forschungszentrum Jülich),
  7. Samaria Observatory (Samaria National Park),
  8. Samothraki Nature Observatory (HCMR).
